Linux versions of apps

Anyone tried to use Linux version of any app's? Was told by a skype rep that their linux version "might" work, but neglected to tell me which one- they have several. And when I went looking for Picasa, I was routed to the linux version for download. Would like some input before I try a download, so curious if anyone has tried, or has any info regarding which linux version has the best chance of working....

merci beaucoup mes amis!

I'm fairly sure you can't install Linux apps without flicking the developer switch and breaking updates.
Imo.Im is the best working option I'm aware of today. It does Skype instant messaging, but not calls.
