Chrome 12 OS beta Released - Chromebook Beta

Chrome OS 12 -- aka the version that will be on the Chromebooks -- is now available in beta.

Google recently unveiled at the Google I/O conference the new Chromebooks, including the Samsung Series 5, and the Acer Chromebook. Both versions will begin shipping June 15th (about one month from today). That gives Google about one more month to put the final touches on its new Chrome OS.

Google just updated the Chrome OS beta to version R12, also known as Chrome 12. This version, which has been in the development stage for a couple of weeks, will now be further tested in beta for a few weeks before it becomes the first version of Chrome OS to go stable. This will likely happen around June 1st - 8th time period.

So what does Chrome OS 12 contain? Well, it’s essentially Chrome 12, the browser (which is also in beta), with a number of Chrome OS-specific features. Those include:
  • Shiny new look
  • The important new File browser
  • GSM support improvements
  • Verizon 3G activation enhancements
  • All-New Flash player
  • (“Report an issue”) is now under the Wrench menu
  • 3G connection to the carrier fixes
  • Wi-Fi connectivity fixes
  • New trackpad and sensitivity setting adjusted
  • Auto update engine and debugging improvements
  • Power optimizations
  • Google Talk video/chat optimizations

Improved on screen indicators: brightness, network status, update icon. I just gave this one a try, and it seems to be pretty polished! It definetly makes the trackpad feel more stable than ever - and this was truly the downfall of previous verisons.

If you're eager to get an early taste of Chromebooks, be sure to check it out!
