I am curious how many people here would ever recommend to their boss to get a Chromebook for business?

I think it would be great for:
- sales people
- administrative
- technical staff

I wouldn't recommend it for Finance people, or people that use a lot of spreadsheets.

Not until remote desktop capability is available natively, or VPN, or best yet a VM View Client.
You mean like thinVNC?
ThinVNC is a html5 remote desktop server. You install it onto the matinee you want to rdp into, or onto a 'gateway' machine. You can then access it from any modern browser using http or https.
There are other similar products out there too.

VPN seems a bit pointless to me when you have no local software. Am I missing something there?

Dunno about a VMWare view client. What would that do that RDP wouldn't?

Yes, my company has switched to gmail for our mail, docs, and they are hosting our internal app for 90% of everything we use a computer for. we too have a vpn available which we are trying to obsolete via a Gapp, and some offices were running an extraordinary tkip on the wifi, but that has been dealt with.
