Well this is interesting. We just learned from Engadget that CR-48 owners are currently receiving emails to buy a new Samsung Chromebook, before the June 15 launch date, through Gilt.

Read more below:
We can't say we expected Gilt to be the first place to offer Samsung's new Chromebook but, well, here we are. Google's now sending out emails like the one above to at least some folks that were a part of the Cr-48 pilot program, telling them that they can join a "limited time" sale on the high-end discount site starting today, June 1st. In true Gilt fashion, the Chromebook (otherwise known as the Samsung Series 5) will also come paired with a "limited edition" sleeve designed by Rickshaw. Unfortunately, "limited" seems to be the keyword here -- the sale is only open to those that have received the email, and it's not clear how many Chromebooks are actually available.
Looks like this is now available to the general public: http://www.google.com/appserve/mkt/fLywFqIiikceBr

I just got my invitation, but I have Chromebooks in my budget for the week it officially goes on sale. Gilt is only offering the Wi-Fi+3G version, I am only interested in the Wi-Fi only model.

Hopefully I'll just win one here...that would reduce a whole lot of stress.

That's clever marketing for you. I can't quite work out the criteria for receiving one of the email invites though. Who exactly got the chance?

Too bad they didn't offer a discount for those people who got the early invite. Just curious - did anyone here already order, after receiving this e-mail?

I am sure they would be sold out by the time they hit the market. Plus it seems the emails just got to a few people but all the same this should not stop anyone from this prized possession.

Got an invite on Wed. Learned that the stock sold out in 4 hours. Google planned for the sale to last three days. They must be happy to find that kind of demand.

The really interesting metric that none of us have is how many Chromebooks were available at Gilt. Samsung gave away 5000 to 6000 of them at IO2011. However, we don't know whether Gilt sold and shipped 25, 2500 or 25,000 units.

Gilt does not accept any cancelled order NOR returns

buyer beware:

i tried to cancel my order just hours after I placed it (ok, it was an impulse buy) and they would not cancel it nor ARE ANY RETURNS ACCEPTED. In other words, I'm stuck with it!

Just be sure you really want this item.......because you can't do anything to return or cancel the order, except in the first 5 minutes after you press the 'accept' button.
