I wouldn't be surprise to see it soon. Frankly, if you look at it, the chromebook is not the big deal. What Google want is to impose its vision of the Cloud which is ... no device !!!
Speak to the sky .... and God will answer.
Seriously, Google sells services. And they want everybody to access it, regardless the device.
Here is the proof : you can access google apps even with firefox (good luck by the way). You do not need a chromebook, you do not even need a chromeOS. You barely need a chrome browser.
THIS is the objective of google. To make the device transparent. Because when you think twice, they will not make money on devices since a) they do not build them (as opposed to Apple) and 2) they don't care !!!
To my opinion, the chromebooks are only a way to implement their cloud model, which is VERY AUDACIOUS .... and incredibly expensive if the model prevails (I warmly encorage you to read those two posts :
google versus apple in the cloud war/ and
chromebooks-towards-free-internet)
So, I would not be surprise to see a lot of devices going out ... just to provoke Apple. Because it costs nothing to Google and the open technology make it very "easy" for manufacturers to propose something. Especially, the chromebox, though probably very useful, is no revolutionary. To me, this is a way to push Apple under pressure.
I was surprised nobody talked of the iCloud on the forum (again, go read
google versus apple in the cloud war/, which should be done already ;-). The cloud from Apple is clearly device oriented : Apple wants us to buy iDevices .... because they make money with this, and once you bought it, you have about no choice but to use their services. In the opposite, Google wants us to use its services on any devices, because any devices means more devices ; and because any device is not an iDevice !
Sorry for this long post and for my english, I hope you'll have as much pleasure to read it as I had to write it. And congratulations to those who already get their Chromebook. You guys rock and it remains that I am jailous anyway ;-)
