Hi - I have limited technical knowledge and I am just trying to get used to this Chromebook and the fact that it is 'cloud' based, so my somewhat basic question is: Can I plug external speakers with their own power source into this machine?
And does it matter whether I use the USB2 or USB3 port?

Speakers as you described, yes. As far as usb2 or 3, if you have a usb3 connector you will want to use the usb3 socket. If not, just stick to the usb2 port.
