I need to put some documents from my old laptop (Windows Vists) onto my new Chromebook. Not sure if I can do this, or how to go about it. Is there a particular flash drive that the Chrome OS requires? Will Chrome translate from Works to Google Docs?

You can use flash drives with chromebooks, but this is not gte best way to do what you want. Your best bet is to upload your documents from your Vista machine to Google docs. It might struggle converting ms works format, you may need save them in a different format first - perhaps rtf or doc.
Once you can view and edit your documents in Google docs, they will work fine on your new chromebook.

And I've been trying to send a document from google mail to google docs with NO success at all. As you can see, I probably bit off more than I was ready for when I made this purchase--not techy enough to figure it all out--but I really love my chromebook and I'm determined to make it work for me.

On your vista machine, open Google docs (https://docs.google.com), click 'Upload', then either 'File' or 'Folder' as is your want.
Your documents will then be uploaded to the cloud and converted* into Google docs format, which then means you can access them from the Chromebook, your Vista PC, or anywhere else just by signing into Google Docs.
Stop thinking about 'transferring things to my chromebook' and instead start thinking 'put my things on the web' Your chromebook is just a web browser, and it doesn't work with local files well.

Yay! Got it! So cool. Converted my files to.rtf and they uploaded beautifully. Thanks so much. Your comment about thinking "put my things on the web" really helped me figure out the whole concept.
Now, one more thing. I'm using my Chromebook in my office. I'm in an old restored farmhouse--thick walls--and I'm upstairs and diagonally opposite from the router on the main computer downstairs, so the signal is weak. Talked to a tech guy at a well-known store, and he recommended a NetGear range extender, which seemed like a really good idea. However, I can't get it to connect with my Chromebook and I'm wondering if there's anything you can suggest to help me----again!

I had a lot of problems with that NETGEAR range extender as well....when you set it up, you probably entered in the wrong WEP key....I had to switch mine to 128 bit in order for it to accept the WEP Key....hope that helps....but still the range extender doesnt work all that well, my signal light is green (which indicates excellent-good signal strength) and my googletv which is literally 5 feet away from the extender, still cuts out every now and again. I would reccomend getting an apple airport pro....I think they have a solid rang for about a 4,000sq ft. home...hope that helps
Russ, I now have my range extender working with my Chromebook. Set it up here at home and finally figured out what to do. The instructions are probably crystal clear to someone more knowledeable than I am. It would have helped me a lot if the instructions had been more detailed and aimed at newbies like me. Anyway, it's working just great, so when I go back to work I'll try again, now that I know what to do. Thanks again for your help--couldn't have done it without you

I don't know how well it's going to work in the office, but here at home it's perfect. If I have trouble at work, I'll take a look at the Apple Airport Pro--thanks so much!
