Getting photos from your memory card

I am just wondering whether it will be possible to get photos from your memory card to the Chromebook any time soon? The last I heard was that Google was planning to enable Chromebooks handle SD cards.

Currently there is no way to transfer files from an external device onto your Chromebook's hard drive. You can, however, upload your files from an external device that is connected to your Chromebook to the web, and then download them back to your hard drive. It's a simple work around that doesn't feel too inconvenient.
Isn't that the opposite ?

Isn't that exactly the two-step, three-step that we all hate and that we were promised to be liberated from?
Doesn't sound like a great solution for more than a few mb at a time. Backing up photos from a camera mid-holiday could take hours on a mediocre connection.

I don't mind it for now, there are plenty of extensions that allow one-click uploads, and my connection speed is exceptional. I'm sure Google is working on a solution for this.
