I was just logging in to ask a question when I noticed a banner that said you could get a free listing with Google places. I clicked it and it looks like I can use my business Gmail account (I have more professional email, but I use this too). I own property that I rent and I do carpentry repairs. Do you think it is worth it for me to get a Google Places account?

I can see no downsides to having an account with them, based on the information on their site. You might take a few minutes to look through their FAQ and see what you can find.

I don't see why not! If it's something that would be beneficial to you, and if you can spare the time/effort to get things listed, then I'd say go for it.
