I have a acer 720 and have a hdmi-vga apdapter. When I hook it up the screen and projector filckers on and off. I touch the keyboard enough to avoid screen saver from being activated.

Also,

does anybody know how to keep the screen on (disable the screen saver)?

Don't know about the screen saver issue, but I have read on numerous occasions, that using cross-over cables (HDMI/VGA) - (or the other way around) is not to be recommended, because of symptoms such as that which you've mentioned - for starters... Don't know what other effects such might produce... It also emphasized that 'same end' cables, of the 'very best quality' are used at all times...
