If you find this thread interesting enough you will like this older thread i made "Why Chromebooks Are a Bad Idea"

Some people don't find the ChromeBook to be a bad idea, just that it's not for them and can't do everything they need it to do.

If your one of those people that feel the ChromeBook isn't for you, you can probably relate to the reasons below, if not post why.

1. Chromebook’s a one trick pony
Chromebook is great if you are just browsing the web. However, what about other tasks like say basic video editing? The problem with Google Chromebook is that it does only one thing, and no matter how well it does it, it just can’t be used for tasks that are to be done on a normal computer (be it PC, Mac or Linux). There are plenty of tasks that the browser-based computer won’t be able to perform. Thus, you can’t completely rely on it, no matter how Google markets it.

2. Too much in the hands of the big G
Although Google is way nicer than Microsoft or Apple, trusting Google completely with almost all your personal data seems a bit difficult. Google has not been the best company when it comes to safeguarding users’ privacy. Moreover, one can’t rule out the possibility of a Google employee looking at your private data. So, if you are a privacy paranoid, don't get a Chromebook and invest in a decent netbook or laptop computer with Linux pre-installed instead.

3. The capricious clouds
As mentioned before, Chromebook stores all the users’ data in the cloud. While this may seem like the next big thing, it’s not without its share of problems. To start with, the cloud may run into a variety of problems, like a hacker attack or something worse. And sometimes, the cloud may face downtime like Gmail did so many times, no one knows. Though many of these things might not happen, one can never be 100% sure about their data on the cloud.

4. For the data junkies
You have your meticulously curated 100 GB music collection sitting somewhere safe in your hard drive. You’ve even made a back up of it on an external disk. Now, when you open your shiny new Chromebook, it turns out you can’t perform your daily head-banging rituals with it. How sad. If you love storing and accessing loads of data on your computer, Chromebook shouldn’t be on your buying list right now.

5. You already own a tablet/netbook
If you already own a tablet computer like the iPad or Samsung Galaxy Tab, then buying a Chromebook won’t be a good investment. The same thing applies to all netbook owners who are happy with their devices.

I'm definitely in this crowd. About 50% of my job as a Linux Admin I can accomplish via some sort of a web GUI, for which the Chromebook is great. The other 50%... well, not so much. I'd love for it to be my go to device, but since a lot of the tools I use for SAN management require Java, I'm out of luck if I don't have my laptop with me.

What is your opinion in regards to browser based photo (non video) editing?
Im not for it. A browser is a browser I'd prefer to keep it that way.
If it's photo editing just to add cool things to your pictures and do slight enhancements and basic things, im all for it.

But for a professional or doing crazy photo editing processing large files (sometimes RAW format files), having a MAC or Windows system with Adobe Photoshop & Adobe Lightroom is by far the better route.

What sort of photo editing are you looking to do?

Lol, honestly, anyone who does any of the things above probably has more than one computer and probably more than one monitor for each. All the people that do those things want a Google Chrome book in addition, they aren't reasons that the Chromebook is not for you it is reasons you want too, and you probably want two anyway.

What is the point of this thread? I thought this was a forum for people who are excited about Chromebooks, not the opposite.
I know it's a forum for people who are excited about ChromeBooks but forums like this are also a good way for people to find out if the ChromeBook is for them.

A thread like this points out why a Chrome book may not be for them and what the ChromeBook can/can't do. I'm not trying to spread negative info on the ChromeBook but share the information I found so others can know more about it

A couple problems I'm having with this whole line of chromebook criticism:

1: Regarding he whole thing about video editing and IT workload, etc., The Chromebook is clearly not meant to be a primary device. It's not the do everything all the time machine any more than an iPad is. It's clearly a secondary portable computer and has a lot of advantages when considered that way. Cloud computing is quickly getting to the place where we might one day do everything. It's not there yet. I dont think that;s even debatable.

2: What is all this personal data everyone's worried about Google spying on? Anything that's e-mailed to you is already "in the cloud" and technically available. What is about your photos and music that you need to keep secret? Seriously. I hear all this conspiracy about data... what data becomes suddenly more susceptible in cloud storage than in your own machine?

I wouldn't worry about it Chrome Guy probably works for Intel or something and just wants to make us think bad things about the Chromebook. Or maybe he works for Facebook, weren't they just in trouble for something like that?

I suppose everybody knows that Chromebook is made for surfing the net, in particular, and with the advantage of saving and accessing documents online. There are, I'm sure, more people who use their computer for web browsing and simple tasks only than those who do other stuff such as video editing. Perhaps, someone will create a web-based video editing application soon(?).
