Samsung Chromebox - What is it?

Samsung Chromebox

In all the excitment about Chrome Notebooks, very few have focussed on the possibility of Google pushing Chrome OS to the desktop. I remember a few months ago writing about my vision of Chrome OS working on the nettop plaform. It seems that I wasn’t too far off; Google unveiled today Samsung’s ‘Chromebox’ which will work as a non-portable platform for their new operating system.

This points a to the possible trajectory that Google wants to take with Chrome OS. It is likely that the Internet giant will focus their new operating system on both the notebook and the Desktop platform, leaving Android OS in the tablet/smartphone market.

The device will begin shipping this summer alongside the Samsung Series 5 and the Acer Chromebook. The Chromebox will initially be aimed at business customers but we see no reason why Google won’t be opening the floodgates to the consumer market.

Very appealing to me, I could never buy into the Mac Mini idea but the Chromebox will cover all the angles I need, access to the Internet and cloud stored documents, Netflix, various web apps, even games. I will be grabbing this for sure!
The question is whether it will be available to consumers or not... currently it is being touted for Business and for Education users.

I'm also curious what resolution it could support. Will it be able to run my 27" monitor?
"reportedly aimed at businesses" ... I would really like a home version with HDMI.
home version with HDMI for $299 has me sold!!!
I wholeheartedly agree!

I'm really looking forward to the Samsung Chromebox. I run my business from home and can't wait to try this out. I use dual monitors now. I hope that won't have to change.
I agree with Makaria once you up-size to a bigger monitor or use dual monitors, it becomes very hard to transitions back into one monitor as there is no longer enough desktop space!

I also am on dual monitors. Being that the ChromeBox is a big step for google and the computing world, if you cant hook up your dual monitors to the ChromeBox right out of the box then eventually an adapter will be in place to help do that or an upgrade.
Good call! Dual monitor support will be awesome.
Chromed, where did you find the price for the chromebox?
Do you know the prices of chrome notebooks too?
Is their any idea if and when the Chromebox will actually be released and any idea of possible price point now that it is getting closer to the release of the Chromebook?
The price of the Chromebox has not been announced. Google only showed a picture and talked very little about it.

Acer will offer a version that begins at $349 for a wifi-only version. A 3G version will be more expensive, though how much hasn’t yet been said.Samsung will offer a wifi verison for $429, with the 3G version for $499.
Why?

The whole point of getting a Chrome OS computer is so that you can you use the web anywhere! Why should I get a chrome OS if I can get a cheaper computor and download chrome. I like the idea of the Chromebook but the chromebox just sounds like a waste of money...

Samsung
Series 5: Wifi Model: $430
: 3g Model: $499
Acer: Wifi: $350
: 3g: ???
If I get too spoiled by my laptop being so great, I will want my desktop to run the same. I'll be looking forward to the desktop's release.
WOW!

I too hope they make the Chromebox available to the personal user. I never even heard of it, til I just this moment stumbled on this forum thread. :p

As a person dwelling in a tiny apartment, and no room for a desktop (I was on Web-TV and dial-up for 8 yrs, before getting my beloved 10.1-inch Acer Netbook), I have NO room for a desktop. LOL, I use my Netbook on a collapsable TV tray, in front of my recliner chair!) :D

So the Chromebox looks small enough for me to possibly accomodate it, and the price is certainly a farsight more friendly to my tiny Social Security retirement income. (True, not portable, but I rarely take my Netbook out of the apartment.)

COOL!
the Chromebox would be perfect for my granny since the mac mini got extremely expensive... I hope its available in Germany soon!

Wow, a 27" monitor? I use a 17" so I can imagine ten inches wider? I think I am going to get one soon just to get the feel.
