We live in the mountains and only have access to a satellite network (EXTREMELY SLOW). I rarely can get to a faster DSL or similar network.

While I am at home, and using the Google Chrome browser, I cannot access my Gmail. But I "can" access my Yahoo mail.
However, when I am in Firefox or Internet, I can SLOWLY access my Gmail. (super frustrating - because I LOVE Chrome because it is faster)

Does this system require Google Chrome surfing only? Will this be an issue on a satellite network??

Who is your satellite provider? What Plan do you have? Maybe i can make your system run better. Do you have a router between the Satellite modem and you computer? Well you going to have if your going to have a Chrome Book, because it is wireless. The satellite Providers, Help Desks, Forums, have been hacked so bad by Anonymous no one knows which way is up or which way is down. Chrome Book should scream like a T1 on satellite - gmail should load from the cache manifest on your hard drive as it ramps up to speed then update the new mail to your in box. You are running Gmail as an online account. This is a real Gmail account? Not one you got through your Satellite Provider. i have been involved with satellite from it beginning about 60 years now

When you first login to Gmail...when it is loading in the right corner there is a option for slow connections...click it...it will save then Gmail seems ok..I had to do this at a friends..

Chrome Book on Virgin American Flights uses satellite at 35,000 feet and it is not slow. It uses the same satellites the Space station has been using as it circles the earth. The astronauts have been able to talk to there families over iPhone and Android for about the last two years. Some 11 year old kid call up his mom when he made it to the top of Mount Everest last year on his smart phone to tell her he made it. Clicking on an option for a slow connection will just commit one to always having the slow connection. It really does nothing to understand or fix the problem.

The link that Jason is referring to takes you to the older HTML version of Gmail, which loads much quicker on slower connections. It may be your only option right now, other than to call your service provider and ask what the deal is.

The satellite connection is not a slow connection! The last thing you want to do is call up the service provider, because they will screw it up worst than it is. Why? Because there is nothing wrong with the satellite connection. Because the problem is with the router you have attached to the satellite modem. The Satellite service provider will tell you they do not do routers. Thus, that’s not their problem – it is your problem. So where to look for help? Well a first year Tec student should be able to solve this problem. I will post a check list. Now I am going to go out side and mow the yard.

The first communication satellite was called “early bird” and it was lunched in the late 60s. This was a time of mainframes, token rings, and dumb terminals. The hub bent pipe technology has not changed much since then. There is this newer technology called “space-way”. It is a cellular switched on board the satellite technology that is compatible with 4G. It has mostly been used by the DoD for cruise missile systems. How ever now is going to be use for the air traffic control and will begin appearing on airlines as WiFi.

Because of the nature hubs there is a lot of traffic being broadcast. ALG Application Layer Gateway can resolve this problem through a routing table on the router that only lets traffic in for only those Application running on you computer the rest of the traffic is dropped. The Application Layer Gateway is part of the 802.11 n standard found on wireless N routers and will greatly improve a satellite connection.

Next the MTU, Maximum Transmit Unit, in this router must be statically set. The way the OS sets the MTU is through querying the DNS server. The satellite is a high latency connection and very thing is on hold until MTU is set. When the browser is stalled out and spinning it wheels this usually is the cause. If set in the in the router it is less than 1 ms for the OS to retrieve it. You set the number in the router it is between (1 – 1500). I start with 1492 then see if I have connection ping Google.com if I do. Then add 2(1494) and ping again until no connection. Then step down by 2 and that’s the satellite routers MTU.

Next it is good to use some other DNS, because the satellite providers DNS has the “DNS worm” in it. The Linksys Routers have three text fields for three DNS. You want to make sure you fill all three fields, because if you don’t the worm will write self back in and capture the router again. The worm will appear as the satellite providers DNS, a DNS cant write it self back into a blank field and then put it self back on top of the list. Only a worm can do that! I use Open DNS and Google DNS as the last DNS place holder.

If you have satellite most likely you have a rural electrical power company. The line need to be brushed out every few years, before this happen branches touch the line and the light dim. So it is good to have a UPS for the modem and router.

That doesn't make sense! Gmail is not browser-dependent (and even if it were, Chrome could surely see it). It makes me wonder if there is something wrong with your IP address that is causing gmail to block you at home.

Edie has a satellite connection at home. It makes sense as a denial of service attack. Edie hasn’t been back here. The satellite service providers have the satellite installers run optimizer software on your computer after the install. The optimizer software installs a back door in to your system. When the DNS worm finds the back door and embed its self in you registry, you are dead. The best thing you can to then is make wind chime out of you hard drive platters. The satellite provider doesn’t care because they have you under contract for 2 years at 80 bucks a month. Technical support will not help you, because they do not do computers – that’s your problem! The good news is the optimizer will not run on a chrome OS.
