After reflecting on just how many new choices there are for web devices, I had a play with Lovely Charts | Online diagramming application and threw together this handy guide. Apologies for lack of pretty device pictures, and please reply with your comments for any bits where you think I'm wrong!

I've deliberately steered clear of Apple vs Android and Apple vs PC distinctions, as they are likely to distract from my main point about device variety.

This really shows how complex devices have become..in 2001 most still had dial up, XP was just rolling out, no MacOS X yet, the nearest there was to a iPhone or such was a Palm Pilot. I can now surf the web from my Printer, have a dog tag that Tweets and so on. I live with out Cable because I can watch everything online for much less...

Only thing that sucks is bandwidth for high end users hasn't changed or merged as quickly. In 1998 I was in the Beta for Cable Modem for Comcast (Columbia Cable then). For 100 a month I had 20Mbps up and down. Now I have UVerse and get 45 up and down..more then 13 years later...CPU tech as increased 100 fold when measuring FPO (Floating Point Operations).

The first desktop release of MacOS X was March 2001, which followed the server version released in 1999.
